Pavement markers -The Ultimate Guide
As global warming continues, unpredictable weather conditions are affecting road safety, making it a more serious concern. In 2025, let’s use high-quality pavement markers to make our roads safer!
What are Pavement Markers ?
Pavement markers, also known as road studs, include reflective pavement markers and solar pavement markers , which are mainly installed on the road to indicate the direction of the road, mark lane dividing lines and edge lines, they guide drivers to drive in the right way to prevent traffic safety problems such as speeding or traffic accidents.
History of Pavement Markers
In 1933, British inventor Percy Shaw created the cat’s eye reflective pavement markers, which relied on the reflection of vehicle headlights to improve nighttime road visibility. However, as traffic volume increased and weather conditions continued to change, the limitations of these traditional pavement markers became apparent. Consequently, in the late 20th century, engineers began integrating solar panels into pavement markers and added LEDs to the reflective elements. These solar-powered batteries charge during the day and illuminate at night, significantly enhancing nighttime road visibility and making driving safer. In the future, you may see pavement markers incorporating sensor technology, allowing communication with vehicles and becoming part of an intelligent road safety system.
Types of Pavement Markers
Pavement markers include reflective pavement markers and solar pavement markers .
1.Reflective Road Pavement Markers
Reflective road pavement markers ,also called cat eyes, road reflectors, sometimes simply called reflectors ,typically made from durable ABS plastic or ACD12 aluminum material, then embedded with reflective materials, the reflective material effectively reflects vehicle headlights. This enhances the visibility of road contours for drivers, thereby improving driving safety.
1-1.Plastic Reflective Road Pavement Markers
The color of the plastic reflective road pavement markers’ shell and reflective sheet can be customized. Available colors include white, yellow, blue, green, red …and so on . The standard size is generally 100*100*25mm, but it can also be customized according to your country’s standards.
1-2.Aluminum Reflective Road Pavement Markers
The reflective sheets of aluminum reflective road pavement markers can be customized in white, yellow, red, green, or blue as per requirements. However, due to the hardness of the aluminum casing, they are more suitable for highways.
2.Solar Powered Road Pavement markers
Also called solar road studs, it contains small solar panels and built-in LED lights. During the day, the solar panels charge and then power the LED lights at night. This greatly improves the visibility of road contours, helping drivers navigate safely. They are especially useful in rainy and foggy weather, enhancing road safety even further.
2.1 Plastic Solar Powered Road Pavement Markers
The shells of plastic solar road pavement markers are mostly made of PS or ABS materials and are widely used in parks, squares, or city roads.
2.2 Aluminum Solar Powered Road Pavement Markers
The shell of the aluminum solar road pavement markers is made of high-quality pure aluminum material, which has extremely strong compressive strength. Therefore, it is generally used on urban roads or highways. Sometimes you can see some of them even being used in the middle of the road. However, due to its numerous electronic components, it is mostly used on the road edge lines.
